Finding the Ovarian Palace

Although it is helpful to know exactly where each center is, it is not necessary for your practice. Remember that the chi flows naturally from one point to another. If you’re not sure of the exact spot for the center, focus on the general area while moving your chi. For many beginning students, however, learning the points along the Microcosmic Orbit are important in order to fully sense the movement of their chi. For others, the points are confusing or overwhelming. I would suggest that you try doing the Microcosmic Orbit by moving from point to point since this will help you learn the energy route in detail and make sure that there are no blockages along the way. If it is difficult or distracting, it is fine to abbreviate the practice as I demonstrate in the Basic Microcosmic Orbit exercise. In this abbreviated orbit, you focus on the crown of the head, the heart center, and the abdominal center. After you are able to sense the flow of your chi through the orbit using these three points, it may be easier to feel each of the points on the full Microcosmic Orbit.

When you first begin your practice, it is often easier to visualize the energy moving from center to center along the front and back channels. For this reason, the exercise directs you to visualize each of the points in order. While the Upward Orgasmic Draw follows the sequence that we have just discussed, the Microcosmic Orbit begins and ends at the navel center, as it is an important point from which to gain chi for the orbit and to store your chi at the end of the sequence. During the exercise, you will circulate the chi around the entire orbit several times, beginning and ending at the navel center.

It may help you to touch your body at the energy center at which you want to feel the chi. This helps focus your mind and also passes chi from your fingertips into that area. Chi flows easily from the fingertips and also radiates from the palms of our hands. Another way to stimulate the flow of chi is to hold your open palm or palms several inches from your body over the point at which you are concentrating your chi. If you put your right hand on one point and your left hand on the next point, you can visualize the energy moving between your hands.

It also helps to imagine the energy flowing down the front of your body with your out-breath—as if the energy is falling down with gravity, while your chest relaxes and you exhale. To move the energy up the Back Channel, focus on “sipping” the energy up the back with the in-breath. Inhale, in small sips, as if you were sucking in your breath through a straw, and imagine your energy being pulled up your spine with your breath. At first this practice seems complex, but with experience, the chi can circulate through the entire orbit in a few seconds using only the intention of your mind.
